The Hercules W2000 was the first production motorcycle to be powered by a Wankel rotary engine, it showed the world that rotary-powered motorcycles were a possibility, a possibility that Norton would later develop into a wins in the British Superbike Championship, the British Formula One Championship, and the Isle of Man TT with their own rotary.

In 1976 Hercules launched the W-2000 Injection in which engine lubrication was from a separate oil tank via a pump. It had 18-inch wheels, a front disc brake and a rear drum brake. According to a March 1976 review in Cycle World, the handling was good but the bike's low ground clearance limited its cornering ability.

The Hercules W-2000 has its single rotor 294cc engine mounted longitudinally to maximize cooling. This is a later model W-2000 with the oil injection facility to remove the necessity for the owner to pre-mix oil with fuel. In order to mount two rotors and achieve the necessary cooling Norton engineer David Garside mounted the rotors laterally.

The Hercules W 2000 was sold in some markets as the DKW W 2000. This was the first production bike with a 27 h.p. (or 32 h.p., depending on source) Fitchel and Sachs rotary engine. Cooling was achieved using a large fan at teh front of the engine and a mixture of oil and fuel (al la two-stroke) lubricated the rotors.
